To perform a PC Reset, sometimes referred to as a Factory Reset, go to the Reset this PC section in the Settings app. Choose an option after you’re done.

1. Run SFC Scan

Press Windows + X keys at the same time

Click Windows PowerShell (Admin).

If prompted for permissions, click Yes

Now run the following command: sfc/scannow

2. Use Media Creation Tool

Visit Windows 10 download page.

Select Download tool.

Run the application.

Under License terms page, select Accept.

On What do you want to do page, choose Upgrade this PC now.

Click The tool will start downloading and installing Windows 10.

Follow instructions on setting up Windows 10 on your computer.

When ready to install, Windows 10 gives a recap of your choices and what will remain through the upgrade. Select Change what to keep.

Set your preferences on Keep personal files and apps, or Keep personal files only, or keep Nothing during upgrade.

Save and close open applications and files that are running.

Select Install.

NOTE

The installation will take some time and your computer will restart a few times, so make sure not to turn it off.

3. Use System Image Recovery

Open the Start Menu, click the Power button. Press and hold Shift and click the Restart button.

Select Troubleshoot.

Click Advanced Options.

Now select System image recovery.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process.

4. Recover from a drive

NOTE

This will remove all personal files, apps, or drivers installed and any changes to your settings. It restores the computer to a factory-like state.

Connect your recovery drive.

Boot your PC from the recovery drive.

Select Troubleshoot.

Now pick Recover from a drive.

Select Just remove my files.

Now click on Recover and wait for the process to finish.

5. Set your computer in Clean Boot

Go to the search box.

Type msconfig and select System Configuration.

Find Services tab. Select Hide all Microsoft services box. Click Disable all.

Go to Startup tab. Click Open Task Manager.

Right-click the first item and choose Disable. Repeat that for all items on the list.

Go back to System Configuration window and click on Apply and OK.

Reboot your computer

6. Perform a Refresh/Reset from WinRE

Insert a USB or DVD Windows 10 media.

Restart your computer.

Press F4 or the appripriate key to open the boot menu.

Select the drive you inserted your USB or DVD into.

Click Next.

Choose Repair your computer.

A blue screen will come up with options.

Choose Troubleshoot.

Select Advanced options.

Choose Automatic Repair from Advanced boot option.

If you still experience the PC reset error, try booting from Windows 10 media then perform Automatic repair from Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

Once the repair is complete, try performing the PC reset again to see whether the issue persists.

What do I do if I can’t reset my laptop?

The solutions for desktop and laptop PCs are the same, so feel free to try all solutions that we mentioned in this guide.

It’s also possible that your laptop came with a disk image, so you can use it to restore it to its factory state if all other solutions fail.

If your PC won’t reset, you should check your installation media and make sure that it’s properly configured, and try all other solutions from this guide.
